September 2011 – Melissa Launay
Melissa Launay is a Spanish – English artist and illustrator living and working in London. She is best known for her delicate and intricate style.
The colourful and decorative quality of her paintings evoke a mysterious and gentle mood of other times and dream worlds into witch one can escape.
Influenced by the elegant lines of Japanese prints, the luxurious colours of arabesque and Indian motifs, the use of gold in Byzantine illustrations and the flat impossible perspectives of medieval and early Renaissance art.
She cites amongst many others: Botticelli, Klimt, Henri Rousseau, Frieda Khalo and German illustrator, Olaf Hajek as the artistic sources which influence her work.
With clients in the UK and internationally, she has illustrated books for British and American publishers, design artwork for municipalities (including a 10 x 5 metre mural for the town of Córdoba, Spain) painted commissions for celebrities (among them Nick Cave and Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and regularly exhibits in art galleries and art fairs.
